KS4 Curriculum information

Examination Board : OCR

What will I be studying?

In this course you will be learning about a range of resistant materials such as wood, metal, plastic and how to develop these ideas and make into a dynamic product.

What sort of coursework will I have to do, how will the coursework influence my final mark?

The coursework will involve this development of designing skills.  It will make up to 60% of your final mark and it will also involve you learning practical skills in respect to how you cut, shape, join and finish various products.

What sort of activities will I be doing in class?

We will be working through the coursework, but at the end of most objectives, we will conduct a mini practice project that will help to further develop your understanding of each area.

How will I be examined?

The final exam will involve 2 papers, one of which will be the general paper and cover things from all the Tech areas and one that will be targeted towards the Resistant Materials area.  You will have a lot of practice at these papers during Yr 10/11.  Mock exams and in class

Do I need special skills?

You need to have shown a reasonable level of practical skills in Years 7 – 9, but we will develop them as the course progresses.

What qualifications will I achieve?

GCSE – you can then go on to take this subject at ‘A’ level.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed throughout the course through your theory coursework, practical project and then two exams at the end.  The majority of the marks will be awarded for your coursework.

What else do I need to know?

What sort of homework will I be expected to do?

Each objective will have an element of homework as well as submission deadlines so the homeworks will be set as required to meet these needs,  You will, of course, be required to do some independent study.

Who can I speak to for further information?

Mr Lambley

What deadlines will I need to meet?

Towards the beginning of the course, you will be given a list of deadlines for the course and you will be expected to meet them.

What can this course lead to in the future?

It can lead to many different opportunities within the design field.  It will also give you skills that can be transferred into many more.
