KS4 Curriculum information

Examination Board : AQA

What will I be studying?

A stimulating and wide ranging course designed to develop innovative and commercially aware designers.

What sort of coursework will I have to do, how will the coursework influence my final mark?

There is a very large coursework project.  This project is worth 60% of the final GCSE.

What sort of activities will I be doing in class?

Visual communications, such as symbols and logos.  Packaging, Pop ups and Posters and promotions, books and boxes of all kinds.

How will I be examined?
There is one examination which is worth 40% of the total GCSE.  The exam is designed to test your designing skills and knowledge.

Do I need special skills?

No special skills, but an interest and desire to be creative would be an advantage.  The use of computers is encouraged and required.

What qualifications will I achieve?

GCSE in Design Technology

How will I be assessed?

There will be a ‘continuous assessment’ of projects and a full ‘criteria based’ project for the coursework.

What else do I need to know?

Am I a suitable person for this subject?  Can I do it?  Special equipment will be needed.

What sort of homework will I be expected to do?

Continuous homework as it is required for the projects.  A lot of homework for the coursework projects.

What deadlines will I need to meet?

There will be lots of deadlines for all the projects.

 

What can this course lead to in the future?

You could become a designer of any kind, or be a journalist or an architect, run a business, or work in the advertising industry or any kind of media (including television and film).
