KS4 Curriculum information

Examination Board :OCR

What will I be studying?

You will study food as a ‘material’ developing your knowledge, skills and understanding, in order to design and make a quality food product.

What sort of coursework will I have to do, how will the coursework influence my final mark?

Coursework commences at Easter time in Year 10 and is completed in March of Year 11.  You will develop a portfolio of work which charts the development of a new food product, which you will invent, during extensive cooking trials.  Represents 60% of final mark.

What sort of activities will I be doing in class?

Cooking, cooking and more cooking!  Theory lessons take place too, related to industrial/commercial practices, systems and control in food production.  Sometimes you will also carry out investigative work on foods, consider their properties and value for money.

How will I be examined?

The final exam consists of two written papers, taken at separate times, in the Hall.  You will be entered in either the Foundation or Higher tier, according to your ability.  These exams make up 40% of your final mark.

Do I need special skills?

You do need to enjoy cooking and have some basic skills.  It is a challenging subject and you must be prepared to develop new ones and to work hard.

What qualifications will I achieve?

You will achieve a GCSE in Food Technology.  If you take the Higher paper, you can achieve an A* - D grade.  If you take the Foundation paper, you can achieve a C – G grade.  Your coursework is included in this grade.

How will I be assessed?

Weekly practical work will be given a grade/level by your teacher and you will also carry out self assessment.  Feedback from your teacher is important.  Coursework is continually assessed and eventually moderated for your final grade at GCSE.

What else do I need to know?

This course is not the ‘easy option’!  It is fast moving, challenging and demanding.  You have to bring ingredients to college every week and be reliable.  When coursework starts you will need an A3 portfolio, and use of a camera.  If you put your energy into the subject, you will have fun and achieve much.

What sort of homework will I be expected to do?

  1. Homeworks consist of organising your ingredients
  2. Written tasks
  3. Research
  4. Coursework

Who can I speak to for further information?

Mrs Withrington

What deadlines will I need to meet?

  1. Each week you must have your ingredients on the day.  Forgetting them is not an option!
  2.   Coursework has strict deadlines which must be met without fail.
  3. Good organisational skills are essential.

What can this course lead to in the future?

  1. Diet and Health Studies
  2. BSc Food Nutrition/Consumer protection
