KS4 Curriculum information

What will I be studying?

Offered at Foundation or Higher tier, this course enables you to acquire the knowledge and understanding to make sense of the Science met in our everyday lives.

This outline describes the course followed in Year 10.  A second Science GCSE is followed in Year 11 as described below.

What sort of coursework will I have to do, how will the coursework influence my final mark?

One Case Study – this consists of a report in which you carefully balance the evidence and opinions on an area of scientific controversy – 20%

One Data Analysis which involves collecting, analysing and evaluating data – 13 3%

What sort of activities will I be doing in class?

A wide range, including experiments, discussions, research, group work and data analysis.

 

 

 

How will I be examined?

You will sit:
2 x 40 minute exams in January
1 x 40 minute exam in June
1 x 45 minute exam in June

All 40 minute exams require you to make short answers to questions on the modules covered. The 45 minute exam will require longer answers.

Do I need special skills?

You need to be adaptable and prepared to question.

What qualifications will I achieve?

GCSE Science

How will I be assessed?

The 4 exam papers account for 16.6% each
Coursework counts for 33.3%
One Case Study – 20%
One Data Analysis – 13.3% or
One practical investigation (33.3%)

What else do I need to know?

You will work from a Workbook as well as use an exercise book.  It is strongly advised that you purchase a revision guide from the Science Department.

What sort of homework will I be expected to do?

A wide range of activities.

What deadlines will I need to meet?

None really as Coursework and Data Analysis activities will be highly structured and mostly completed in class.

What can this course lead to in the future?

During the Summer of Year 10, you will be advised which Year 11 course to follow.  Either Additional Science  - preparation for A levels
or

Additional Applied Science – a study of science in work related contexts.

 

KS3 Curriculum Information


The KS3 Curriculum is currently undergoing review in light of the new government directives. KS3 information will be added as soon as we have undergone our internal review which will start on the training day
