KS4 Curriculum information

What will I be studying?

You will participate in a range of different practical activities.
In your theory lesson, you will study the following topics:  Anatomy and Physiology, Factors affecting performance, Health, Safety and Training and Reasons and Opportunities for participation in physical activities.

What sort of coursework will I have to do, how will the coursework influence my final mark?

One piece of coursework worth 10%.  You will plan a 6 week training programme for yourself in a sport of your choice.

What sort of activities will I be doing in class?

Learning and developing skills in practical lessons. 
In theory lessons, a range of methods will be used to allow individual and  group work.

How will I be examined?

An examination paper worth 40% of the total mark.  The paper will consist of a range of short and longer answer questions on any aspect of the syllabus.

Do I need special skills?

You will need to demonstrate a good practical ability in all activities, displaying a sound understanding of the rules of each activity.

What qualifications will I achieve?

GCSE in Physical Education.

How will I be assessed?

You will be marked out of 25 for all of your practical activities.  You will enter the highest 4 grades to the exam board which will count as 50%.  Your coursework is marked out of 10, counting as 10% of the final grade.  The remaining 40% is the written GCSE exam.

What else do I need to know?

You will haven a 1hr 40minute practical lesson each week and a 50 minute theory lesson each week.  It will be beneficial to be involved in a range of extra curricular activities.

 

What sort of homework will I be expected to do?

You will be expected to complete one piece of homework each week to be handed in the following lesson. We will expect you to spend a minimum of one hour on your homework.

Any member of the PE department or pupils that are currently studying the subject.

What deadlines will I need to meet?

Homework deadline each week.
Coursework deadline – End of summer term 2009.

What can this course lead to in the future?

Career in the Leisure/Sport Industry, Teaching, Physiotherapy, Youth Work, Sports Journalism, Professional Sports person, Police Officer and many more.
