If you have studied one language so far, you will continue with that language to GCSE. If you study two now, you can choose either language or both. We encourage all dual linguists to continue with both languages to GCSE. Those who study both in Years 10 and 11 will be in a small, friendly class for one of the languages and all students who study both, achieve very high grades.
What sort of coursework will I have to do, how will the coursework influence my final mark?
You will complete 4 – 6 pieces of coursework during Years 10-11. These consist of short essays of 100-150 words. We will choose the best of 3 of these to be submitted. Coursework makes up 25% of the final grade.
What sort of activities will I be doing in class?
You will be learning new vocab. Through games, learning grammatical structures, reading and listening exercises, acting out role plays and, of course, speaking lots of French and/or Spanish.
How will I be examined?
You will have an oral exam (15 minute interview in the foreign language) which takes place in March/April of Year 11. You will sit a reading and listening exam in the summer with all the other exams. You will have completed your coursework by March of Year 11.
Do I need special skills?
No – your lessons in Years 7 – 9 will have prepared you for either languagse courses.
What qualifications will I achieve?
You will achieve a GCSE in either French or Spanish or both. The exam board is OCR.
You can be entered for different ‘tiers’ (Higher/Foundation) in different skill areas (listening, reading etc) so the exam is very flexible. For example, if you are confident in speaking but not in listening you can enter Higher speaking and Foundation listening.
What sort of homework will I be expected to do?
You will be set some learning homework, and some reading/writing homework. There are no long projects. Homework is very similar to Years 7 – 9.
Who can I speak to for further information?
You can speak to your languages teacher, or the Heads of MFL (Miss Mayzes and Mrs Mwamatandala)
What deadlines will I need to meet?
You will have regular vocab. Tests just as in Years 7 – 9 and normal homework. All coursework is done IN CLASS so there are no coursework deadlines to be met at home.
What can this course lead to in the future?
The GCSE will obviously enable you to communicate when you go abroad. It is also a good step towards ‘A’ level languages. Some Employers/Universities are considering turning down students without a qualification in a modern foreign language.
