KS4 Curriculum information

Examination Board : OCR

What will I be studying?

Four units of work, namely Water, Landforms and People

Climate, Environment and People

People and Place People, Work and Developments

What sort of coursework will I have to do, how will the coursework influence my final mark?

The Cross-Unit Task takes 2 weeks and is an investigation into a physical and human topic.  The Course study takes 4 weeks and is based on a day’s field work and is in the form of a report.

What sort of activities will I be doing in class?

A variety of activities ranging from resource-based (text-book, video), enquiries, role-play, ICT based activities and discussion.

 

How will I be examined?

There are 2 tiers
Foundation tier (grades C – G)
Higher tier (grades A*-D)
The Case Study Paper covers 3 units of work.
The Problem-solving paper deals with the fourth, and changes each year.

Do I need special skills?

Not really any subject specific skills.

What qualifications will I achieve?

GCSE Geography

How will I be assessed?

Two examination papers at the end of the course and two pieces of coursework.

Examinations – 75%
Coursework – 25%

What else do I need to know?

There are opportunities for field-work linked to the coursework.  There is also a residential stay at the Malham Tarn Field Study Centre in the Yorkshire Dales, at the start of Year 11.

 

What sort of homework will I be expected to do?

Linked to class activities and can take the form of a similar range, plus some research activites.

What deadlines will I need to meet?

Chiefly connected to coursework, currently in January (of Year 10) and December (of Year 11).

What can this course lead to in the future?

Geography can be useful in a lot of careers, especially in tourism, transport, planning.  Students go on to ‘A’ level courses and also university degrees.

The KS3 Curriculum is currently undergoing review in light of the new government directives. KS3 information will be added as soon as we have undergone our internal review which will start on the training day
