Examination Board : EDEXCEL

What will I be studying?

Drama at GCSE in Year 10 and 11 is all about exploration of emotions, co-operating with others, communicating effectively and learning how to trust and be trusted.

What sort of coursework will I have to do, how will the coursework influence my final mark?

Coursework in drama is 20% of the final grade.  All the coursework is completed in Year 11 and it is done as a portfolio that reflects the work that you will do in front of a live camera and explore improvisation workshops and exploring a drama script.

What sort of activities will I be doing in class?

As a drama student you will become a member of the ‘class theatre company’ where you will be working on themed projects, improvisations, learning how to set the lights, use sound, make DVD’s, work backstage or on stage or if we need the help, sweeping the stage!

What will the final exam be like?

Scary! You will be expected to perform an original piece of drama in front of an external examiner with a group of other students who you will work with over a 10 week period in school and in your own time.  Did I mention scary?  It is an exciting opportunity for you to complete the drama course with a performance that reflects your skills and talents.  Technical GCSE drama students will have to show a talent with lights, sound, props, mask or costume that will be part of a final performance.

Do I need special skills?

No, just a willingness to learn and a willingness to explore.  Self Confidence is important and self belief is essential if you are to overcome some of the difficulties that you might face.

What qualifications will I achieve?

You will be the proud owner of a GCSE in Drama which Hills Road, Long Road, CRC and other colleges still see as being an example of someone who will have good communication skills.

How will I be assessed?

In Year 10 you will be assessed on a regular basis on performance based pieces that will be evaluated by your drama teacher but also by your peers.  In Year 11 the exam process kicks in at the beginning of the first term and ends in late April/May with your final performance exam.

What else do I need to know?

You need to know that drama is not an easy option.  It will push you emotionally and test you in ways that might feel difficult to overcome.  But you will overcome them if you approach the subject with an open mind and a willingness to trust.

What sort of homework will I be expected to do?

If we are doing a production there will be a need for you to learn lines and know what you should be doing on stage.  In Year 11 there will be coursework deadlines

Who can I speak to for further information?

Speak to any current drama student in Year 10 and 11.  You can also talk to Mrs. Shortt or Mr Gair.

What deadlines will I need to meet?

You will be expected to keep a journal every week of every drama lesson.  The only other homework other than coursework in Year 11 will be an expectation to come to some drama lessons with a piece of drama rehearsed in your own time- either in school or out of school.

What can this course lead to in the future?

The Royal Shakespeare Company.  We have one ex-student who is an actor with the RSC.  The BBC.  We have a number of students who have gone on to work with the BBC. …but more likely it will lead you to be a more confident person in your classes at BVC. A more confident person at interview for Sixth Form College and beyond.
