What will I be studying?
There are four main study areas, based around a set theme, for each piece of coursework. These are: investigation of the theme, artist research, planning a major piece of work of your own and producing the major piece of work.

What sort of coursework will I have to do, how will the coursework influence my final mark?
There are two major pieces of coursework. Each one is two terms in length. These consist of a research and planning journal followed by, at least, one final outcome.
Coursework is 60% of the overall mark.

What sort of activities will I be doing in class?
Work from secondary sources and from observation.
Investigation of artists. Analyse and evaluation oftheir work.
Exploring a range of 2-D and 3-D materials, in order to plan and make major pieces.
Materials/processes available to you include: printmaking, textiles, digital photography/computer graphics, painting, drawing and sculpture. |
How will I be examined?
This takes place over two days. It is a practical exam. You have eight school weeks to prepare for the exam and you work on a theme set by the exam board.
This “Externally Set Assignment” is worth 40% of the total mark.

Do I need special skills?
No. This course builds on skills you have developed in earlier key stages. If you have worked well then, and you enjoy the subject, that is all that’s required. |
What qualifications will I achieve?
A GCSE in Art and Design from the Edexcel Examination Board.

How will I be assessed?
Continuous assessment for coursework.
All classwork and homework produced during the first four terms of this course is used towards the two pieces of coursework.
Work produced for the exam in the fifth term will be presented in exhibition form for assessment, as will the coursework. |
What else do I need to know?
You will need a basic range of Art materials for your personal use at home and school.
You should be prepared to visit museums, galleries and places related to your theme in your own time. This will benefit your research. |
What sort of homework will I be expected to do?
You will largely be asked to research and plan coursework. Regular homework is essential. A weekly commitment of one and a half hours is expected.

What deadlines will I need to meet?
Coursework 1. Easter of Year 10.
Coursework 2. Christmas of Year 11. The final exam - Easter of Year 11. Assessment exhibitions -May of Year 11.

Leading to careers such as Architecture, Fashion, Interior, Graphic, Hair and Beauty and Window Dressing.
