Curriculum

During the five years that students spend at the College, we aim to provide a programme of study that builds upon the work undertaken in primary schools and:

  • Promotes a broad and balanced curriculum for all students.
  • Provides a relevant curriculum for individual student needs.
  • Promotes development in all curricular areas of the learning experience, and aspires towards excellence and student endeavour.
  • Gives opportunities for each student to develop individual interests and talents.
  • Enables all students to make informed and sensible choices.
  • Develops the student as a member of the community and as a future adult in society, with a range of personal and social opportunities and responsibilities.

At Bassingbourn Village College we recognise that children learn at different rates in different subjects and will demonstrate different strengths. As students move through Key Stage 3 they will be set according to their academic ability or interest in individual subjects. Individual attainment and potential are assessed according to National Curriculum requirements and students' placing in teaching groups are reviewed regularly.
At Key Stage 4 students continue to be set according to ability,

Religious Education and Citizenship is compulsory and these are taken as two half GCSEs by the majority of students.
The selection of GCSE option subjects takes place in Year 9, following a programme of information meetings, consultations and interviews to ensure the suitability and educational soundness of courses for individual students.
