Admissions for 2009 – 2010

Bassingbourn Village College is a non-selective comprehensive school with an agreed admissions number of 150 from September 2009. This figure, which is published in the prospectus, is reviewed each year by the Governors. The designated catchment area is made up of the villages served by the four named primary schools below, but admission numbers are made up by students from outside these schools. Should applications exceed the agreed admissions number however, the following admissions criteria will be applied: -

  1. Looked after Children, or a child who has a Statement of Special Educational Need which names Bassingbourn Village College as its designated school.

  2. A proven medical need relating to the child and requiring certification by an appropriate doctor and Community Medical Officer, which explains why it is essential for the student to be admitted to Bassingbourn Village College.

  3. A child who lives in the catchment area and attends Bassingbourn County Primary School, Guilden Morden Primary School, Petersfield Primary School, Orwell or Steeple Morden Primary School, and has a sibling* at Bassingbourn Village College at the time of admission.

  4. *Sibling is defined as a child who is living in the same family unit

  5. A child who lives in the designated catchment area who attends one of the named primary schools within it (see 3 above).

  6. A child who lives in the designated catchment area with a sibling at Bassingbourn Village College at the time of admission.

  7. A child who lives in the designated catchment area of the named primary schools.

  8. A child who lives outside the designated catchment area who attends one of the named primary schools within it and who has a sibling at Bassingbourn Village College at the time of admission.

  9. A child who lives outside the designated catchment area who attends one of the named primary schools within it.

  10. A child who lives outside the designated catchment area who has a sibling at Bassingbourn Village College at the time of admission

  11. If places remain available, the distance between home and school as measured by the shortest available, accessible route.

In cases of equal merit, priority will go to children living nearest the College as measured by the shortest available, accessible route.

Any child refused a place will be placed on a reserve list. As part of the co-ordinated scheme for secondary admissions, the Local Authority Admissions Team holds the initial reserve list on behalf of the governing body until the end of the first week of the autumn term in the initial year of intake. This list is reviewed annually when parents are asked if they wish their child to remain on the reserve list.

If a child is refused a place at the school they have the right of appeal to an Independent Appeals Panel. The panel is made up of three people who are independent of the governing body and the Local Authority. They will take into consideration all the circumstances of the case put before them and any decision they make is binding on the governing body and the parents concerned.

If you wish to apply for a place at Bassingbourn Village College for your child from September 2008 you must complete the Local Authority preference form and return it via your child’s primary school. Please return this form by Friday 7th November 2008.
